Knowing the Development of PlayStation 3

It has been long since the first gaming console was introduced and through the years, several gaming consoles had been designed to cater the gamer’s interests. Super Famicon, Sega Console, Gameboy, PS1 are just a few of the things which has gotten the interest of gamers in the world. And now, the introduction of one of the latest gadgets in the gaming industry just made quite a great impact in the whole planet.

Sony officially publicized the PS3 at the E3 Conference way back May 16, 2005 through sampling of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and a video footage of Final Fantasy VII to showcase the console’s specifications.

The initial product has the following specifications; two HDMI ports, three Ethernet ports and six USB ports though this was changed a year later to just one HDMI port, one Ethernet port and four USB ports, to reduce costs. It was primarily introduced in Japan on the 11th of November 2006 followed by a release in North America that same month of the year on the 17th.

At that time, it costs $499 for the 60 GB model though there are 20 GB too. It includes an HDMI port, Wi-Fi internet, flash card readers and a chrome trim with the brand logo coated in silver and over 81,639 PS3 consoles were sold within that same day it was introduced.

Sadly, due to some unforeseen events, the global launch was delayed until March that is why Sony advised their clients about the refund eligibility for prepaid orders. Though, it does not change the fact that proceeding with pre-orders is still being honored. Though this is not a good start for Sony’s newest product, Sony was still confident about the console’s capability to gain the favor of clients.

In addition to these mishaps, PS3 soon later received unfavorable feedbacks such as lack of interesting games and having a high price tag. This resulted in an unfavorable marketing position against its console counterparts namely the XBOX and the Wii wherein, both systems have a more economical price, complimented by various games with quality.

Furthermore, some even mentioned that it was incompatible and that developers had difficulty programming it. Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick even mentioned that Nintendo’s XBOX and Wii are doing better when it comes to their sales rate. However, despite all these negative feedbacks from around the globe, there are still some who believe in the capability of the PS3 and what it CAN do rather than what has happened in the past. It does not change the fact that PS3’s exceptional feature is something to look forward to and they just have to give them enough time to have it fully developed. Even so, there are a lot who believe that the PS3 is one of the must have gadgets of this time despite the limited availability of good games.

On the other hand, Sony also developed another version of PS3 to support the downtrodding sales trend of their first product. The new product is called the PS3 slim which has received more favorable reviews compared to it’s predecessor, the same with an increase in sales in less than a day after it was first released. With it’s low-power consuming system complimented by a more reasonable price, clients and gamers alike, find it more efficient for their gaming needs and the only criticism that it got was it’s slim, “ugly” appearance, comparing it to the more well-suited appearance of the actual PS3. Overall, the repackaging of the PS3 proves to be one great countermeasure by Sony and if things continue to go well with it, then Sony should be able to gain back their lost revenue with the prior model.
